From the Ricettario Fiorentino, a professional handbook for apothecaries in the city of Florence, published 1556. We recreate a recipe for "Unguento di Minio", a highly pigmented red cream, scented with roses and myrtle.
Here we make only one change-the original contained beautiful yet toxic red cinnabar. We substitute with equally beautiful (and safe!) red ochre, one of the most ancient of cosmetic pigments.
